Another link seemed to suggest that it was the result of it having been modded - things weren't put back together quite well. A quick google and someone suggested just pressing the cable down (what!?). So now I have a PS2 I spent several hundred on in an attempt to avoid having to buy PS2s over and over and over again. Opening up the game I played last year (without issue), and there it was - the same scratch. I went to check if the disc was scratched, and sure enough, there was a huge circular scratch where the laser ribbon would pop up. Today I was just in the middle of Xenosaga Ep III for the first time in maybe 10 years, when a scene abruptly came to a halt. It seemed to work pretty well for a while, and I completed a game on it earlier last year. I tried to find a new PS2 and found the internet was awash with scams, but I found what seemed to be a new PS2 from the latest 90000 series. The seller told me it wasn't their fault it broke after I received it, and Yahoo Auctions changed their policy to respect no real claims beyond whether the product arrives or not. Attempting to pick up a used PS2 on Yahoo Auctions landed me a console that would arbitrarily stop playing music and other sound files during play.

Two white PS2 slims I've had struggled to run games properly (one gave me intermitent "no disc" messages while playing FFXII, and the other seemed to struggle to keep games up to speed). I've had the worst luck with PS2s in recent years.
